Background

Who We Are

The Hong Kong Journalists Association is run by working journalists for the sole purpose of improving the working environment for the men and women who gather the news in Hong Kong.

Established in 1968, the HKJA seeks to enhance press freedom and the integrity of news coverage, and as a trade union, also aims to improve working conditions for journalists and to remove barriers to news gathering. No other organisation in Hong Kong has as long a history and as consistent a record in striving toward these goals.

Our independence is funndamental to us. We accept no direct subsidies from any government or commercial organisation. Our operations are funded by membership fees and fund-raising efforts which includes an annual dinner. Internationally, we are affiliated with the Belgium-based International Federation of Journalists and other journalist organisations, all of which share our philosophy and goals.
