Workshop: Password for Investigative Reporting

The Internet has transformed the world, and that includes the news media. Its benefit is the immense amount of data available. Its drawback is accuracy, plus difficulties about piecing together all the data. Now, you have the chance to beta-test a new database of who's who and what's what in Hong Kong affairs.

Commentator David Webb, who's loved by the small investor and loathed by the controlling shareholder who wants to get unfair benefits from small holders, has put together a new database called Enigma, which will be launched for free public access in a few months' time.

Enigma contains over 28,000 names, including all listed company directors, statutory and advisory body members, legislative and district councillors, JPs, Bauhinia winners and even relatives.

Mr. Webb will give HKJA members an exclusive preview of the database, and provide a secret login password for those who wish to try it and provide feedback on how to make it even more useful for journalists. He will also talk about his investigative work on Webb-site.com.

Given space limitations, only 25 people will be able to attend. HKJA members will have reference.

Details of the workshop are as follows:
Date:        December 8th 2007
Time:        14:00-16:00
Place:       Ming Pao Daily News.
15/F., Block A, Ming Pao Industrial Centre,

Please fax the reply slip to the HKJA on 2572-7329, e-mail it to [email protected] or post it back to HKJA before December 3rd.
