Background

About HKJA

The HKJA is an internationally recognized voice on press freedom in Hong Kong. Our annual report is widely regarded as a definitive statement on the state of Hong Kong’s freedom of expression. It is widely circulated about foreign consulates and NGOs, and is quoted often in foreign media reports about Hong Kong.

At Home, we are constantly on the offensive against barriers to news coverage, such as legislation that infringes on the free flow of information and the public’s right to know.

We also seek to raise professional standards, organising seminars and workshops to improve reporting skills and keep members informed of developments in the profession. We also organise overseas tours to places where news is breaking, to enable members to get on-the-ground knowledge of major events.

Who We Are

The Hong Kong Journalists Association is run by working journalists for the sole purpose of improving the working environment for the men and women who gather the news in Hong Kong.

Established in 1968, the HKJA seeks to enhance press freedom and the integrity of news coverage, and as a trade union, also aims to improve working conditions for journalists and to remove barriers to news gathering. No other organisation in Hong Kong has as long a history and as consistent a record in striving toward these goals.

Our independence is fundamental to us. We accept no direct subsidies from any government or commercial organisation. Our operations are funded by membership fees and fund-raising efforts which includes an annual dinner. Internationally, we are affiliated with the Belgium-based International Federation of Journalists and other journalist organisations, all of which share our philosophy and goals.
